Ingredients

6 T cocoa

1 C sugar

2 C flour

2 t baking soda

1/2 t salt

1 C mayonaise

1 C cold water

1 t vanilla

Cooked Frosting

2 1/2 T flour

1/2 C milk

4 T butter

4 T Crisco

1/2 C sugar

1 t vanilla

Preparation

Grease and flour two 8" layer pans or an oblong loaf pan. Sift toether all the dry ingredients. On low speed, stri in the water, mayonaise, and vanilla. Beat on medium speed for about two minutes, until smooth and completely incorporated. Pour into the prepared pans and bake at 350 degrees for about 20 minutes. Frost with the cooked frosting (we always called this “Viv’s Frosting”, as she did not like sweet frosting, and it was her annual birthday cake.)

For the frosting: Cook the flour and milk to make a smooth paste and let it cool. In a deep bowl, beat the butter and shortening until fluffy, then add the paste. Gradually add the sugar and vanilla and beat until sugar is completely dissolved and the icing is fluffy. Double for a layer cake.
